I just want to ask maybe you are interested on making CNA-Q as host for Installfest, last November 24, we organize a meet up and it was really amazing that there is more that 10 people showed up as what we only expect to meet 4 persons based on the e-mail list. It was un-formal meeting but it brings my attention that more people now in Qatar is interested with Open Source. As chit-chat goes one we just bring up and idea that why we just start organizing with 'Installfest' and we can target students/professors on this activity. Rough idea for the Installfest, we will just utilize one laboratory room or any open area where we can accommodate students/professors that can easily go in and out, some desktop computers, internet connections, electric, tables and chairs. By the way maybe you are free this Saturday we can discuss if personally if you are interested? If yes for you Saturday morning at coffee beanery around 9:00am is great. Hope you are interested. We have computer labs but I'll need to confirm that network security will be relaxed so that we won't have (for example) MAC filtering applied by the switches. Probably they can bring but I will try to organize from companies to sponsor so we can have real good desktops around and in exchange they can advertise their company like emitac or al mana, but the real easy way is people can bring some of their PC's/Laptop As for network issue, I can bring some CISCO switch to use on all Desktops/Laptops or even wireless they can just allow one MAC address to your isolated network. #Let me know of any sponsorships you can line up. I expect we'd be interested in discussing this option as well. After I organize the steering team and I can make proper letter to the company saying that we are organizing this activity in collaboration with CNA-Q and your company. But what you think is there a big chance that they will allow us to do that in your campus? It was un-formal meeting but it brings my attention that more people now in Qatar is interested with Open Source. This too will have to wait for January. Some questions: 1. People would (I expect) be bringing their own computers/laptops for the Installfest? We have computer labs but I'll need to confirm that network security will be relaxed so that we won't have (for example) MAC filtering applied by the switches. 2. Let me know of any sponsorships you can line up. I expect we'd be interested in discussing this option as well. I also need to see what other sort of physical security issues there might be in terms of getting people physical access to the campus. ________________________________ From: Kutch Villasor [mailto:kutch@km33.com] Sent: Wednesday, December 05, 2007 1:45 PM To: Niedermayer, Daryle Cc: list@qglug.org; 'Nigel Gourlay'; 'Nigel Gourlay' Subject: RE: Installfest at CNA-Q WOW that is quick reply. The Aug15 Debian distribution also supports seamless filesystem encryption in the installer and works really well. It also supports Software RAID extremely well if you manually configure the partitions. Note if we are doing this we should consider how to get access to repositories from the room. We should also use apt-cacher on one machine to speed up installs - both for Etch and Ubuntu AKA 'Debian for human beings'. We should also add the following as default applications and utilities W32codecs, Msttcorefonts, Libdvdread3, regionset, module-assistant, skype and limewire.
